Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In the wake of the shocking rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been tasked with securing the hospital after widespread vandalism during a mob attack. On Friday, senior CISF officer K Pratap Singh led a recce of the hospital premises to assess the security needs.
The move comes just a day after the Supreme Court reprimanded the Kolkata Police for their failure to prevent the mob from storming the hospital on August 15, during a 'Reclaim the Night' protest that sought justice for the slain doctor. Medical equipment and supplies were destroyed on two floors during the attack, which has now led to most doctors fleeing the campus, leaving patients in dire need of care.
The Supreme Court expressed concern over the state's lack of preparedness to deal with the incident and underscored the necessity of creating a secure environment for medical personnel to return to work. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that central forces would be deployed to restore order, while Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, raised no objections. Meanwhile, protests at the hospital continue to intensify as demonstrators demand swift justice for the victim.
